Peer pressure is
not exclusive to teens; it is everywhere and everyone
will face its trap at some point in his or her lives.
Societal norms can sometimes challenge even the most
disciplined to take part in activities we oppose --
wearing certain types of clothes, or maybe engaging
in promiscuous behavior or even drug use.
How you feel about
yourself and your place in this world will determine
how well you resist peer pressure. Who is more likely
to succumb to peer pressure? According to mentor/counselor
Mike Hardcastle specific traits may put you at higher
risk of tripping into the pitfall of peer pressure:
- Low self esteem
- Lack of direction
in life
- Lack of confidence
- Depression
- Lack of strong
ties to friends, feeling that friends could turn on
you easily or with little reason
- Eating disorders
Let's fight and prepare
to win the battle against peer pressure by taking these simple
steps: identifying the problem by doing a self evaluation;
eradicating the problem by freezing communication, or contact
with people who have a negative influence; and by entertaining
alternative activities.
Evaluate your goals
and how to reach them. When assessing your goals, be specific.
Short, mid and long term goals nurture success. Personal obstacles
should be revealed when you begin your evaluation; know where
you stand, and do not digress from your principles. Take time
and be completely honest; in doing so, you establish your
ground so you can maintain your ground.
Our actions, speech and
concepts derive from what we entertain. Unfortunately, what
is promoted today as entertainment is chock full of distorted
principles and ideas. Consequently, perceptions of sexual
purity, wholesome relationships and positive morale are about
as visible as wind.
Ask yourself, "What
do I entertain?" You may be entertaining people or behaviors
contrary to your belief system. If so, it is never too late
to make a few changes.
Eradicate negative
influences and behaviors. Take a moment or two out of
your busy schedule to do some internal-house cleaning. Throw
away the paramount packages of bad behavior and self doubt
and replace baggage with presents of faith, hope and love.
Entertain alternative
activities. Diverting attention from your problems and
bless someone else...there's a thought! You may find your
healing in giving.
Whether it is pressure
to agree or pressure to act, know that everyone deals with
those challenges; you are not alone. Conscience efforts must
be made in order to maintain your ground. Take those essential
steps and walk in victory over peer pressure.
